How To Reduce Air Conditioning Costs In Thailand During The Summer

How To Reduce Air Conditioning Costs In Thailand During Summer

Summer is a season filled with barbecues and beach excursions. Additionally, it comes with a lot of heat, requiring you to crank up your air conditioner. However, the expenditures of cooling your house or apartment in Thailand may quickly pile up. Every year I get people asking me if their meter is correct because they can't believe they spent xxx baht on electric.

Here are some Eco-friendly methods for lowering your summer utility expenses. If you’re a renter, I included some tips for your group as well.

Installing Window Film

Installing window film on a few of your windows can help offset your cooling costs. If you have direct sunlight on some of your windows this often overlooked tip can reduce your cooling costs. There is a chart on one of the Lazada stores I happen to be looking at that shows a comparison with and without and there seems to be a huge difference of almost 8 degrees. A large roll with shipping is less than 100 THB and most people with a little patience can install it. If your in an apartment or a condominium, please check the rules and regulations first to see if there are any rules governing window films or ask your Juristic manager or management team.

Reduce Sunlight Entering Your Home or Apartment

Grow plants on your balcony
Sunlight may increase the temperature in your home, making it more tempting to turn on
your air conditioner. Consider adding draperies or curtains. Additionally, you may grow trees near your window to hide sunlight or add house plants to balcony areas in front of large windows.

Additional strategies to keep your space cool in the heat include the following:

  • Awning installation
  • Utilize curtains that are opaque.
  • Include a privacy film.
  • Curtain liners can be used to block off light.
  • Garage Door Insulation (if you have one)
  • Room Insulation or roof insulation
  • Roof painting

Your Windows Should Be Sealed

Air can escape via cracks or holes on the inside of your windows, wasting energy and allowing cold air to escape. This increases the workload of your air conditioning machine and hence your heating and cooling bills. Caulk or weatherstrip your casement to keep air out. Replace weatherstripping every few years.

Consider the following additional methods for effectively sealing windows:

  • Include shrink film (if allowed)
  • Fill up cracks with caulk or nail polish.
  • A draft snake should be placed at the bottom of your windows and doors.
  • Replacing missing or sagging glazing

Replace Your Thermostat with a Programmable Thermostat

A smart thermostat enables you to customize the temperature to your liking. The gadget then learns your preferences and maintains a comfortable temperature in your house. Additionally, it can help you save money on energy bills by shutting off at night or while you're gone and reactivating when you come home. The thermostat may be operated by a smartphone app, which adds to its convenience.

Several additional benefits of using a programmable thermostat include the following:

  • It may include movement sensors.
  • It is capable of tracking energy use.
  • It features more easily-readable temperature choices.
  • It is compatible with a variety of different devices.
  • It can provide you with information on the local weather.

Make Use of a Ceiling Fan

Fans can help circulate a refreshing air around your home. This can help limit the quantity of cold air produced by your air conditioning system. Place fans in locations where people congregate and turn them off when you leave the house. Remember if you don't turn them off, they will eat more power than they save you.

Additional factors to consider when choosing a ceiling fan include the following:

  • Location
  • Size
  • Style
  • Alternatives for control
  • Budget

Change Your HVAC System's Air Filters

These filters keep dust out of your vents, allowing air to circulate enabling your system to function efficiently. Filters that are clogged make it more difficult for your HVAC system to circulate the air. This is why they should be replaced every few months. A clean filter also contributes to the improvement of indoor air quality.

The instructions for changing your filter are as follows:

  • Turn off your HVAC system.
  • Take away your access panels.
  • Remove the previous filter
  • Insert the new one.
  • Close the panels and re-energize the system.
  • Regularly clean and vacuum your purifier.

Remember Feb to August are the hot months in Phuket (Thailand)

Here is a chart I found online showing peak temperatures are the end of March with it not starting to cool down until August. This is average but every year is not the same depending on rainfall. Some years have less rain than others. You may be spending more time inside this year with everything going on now in the outside world.

Cooking Outside

BBQ cooking at Patong Harbor View Phuket
Utilizing indoor ovens and stove tops generates excessive heat, putting additional strain on your air conditioning equipment. Summer is the ideal season for barbecuing outside (weather permitting). The weather is pleasant, and you now have a reason to host a family barbecue.

Also running an electric stove top, hood and oven add up. Those three items along with trips back and forth to the refrigerator add to the electric bill every month.

In the summer, you want your home to be a haven from the heat. This frequently entails turning on your air conditioner. Consider the following suggestions to assist you in saving money and staying cool. Stay Safe everyone please and stay away from crowds during this Corvid-19 madness.
