Cycling Phuket for a Month or More: Road Bikes, Mountain Trails, Routes From Patong, and Staying Safe in Traffic

Phuket looks like a cyclist's dream from the plane window — a green island ringed by coast road, with beaches every few kilometres. On the ground it is still a wonderful place to ride, but it is a very specific kind of wonderful: hilly, hot, and shared with traffic that plays by its own rules. If you're staying a month or more, a bicycle (or a rented road bike for weekend missions) opens up a side of the island that the songthaew route never shows you — the dawn coast, the rubber-plantation back roads, the Old Town coffee stop at the end of a climb. This is the honest version of how it works from Patong.

The Geography Nobody Puts in the Brochure: It's Hilly

Start with the truth that surprises everyone: Patong is in a bowl. Every ride out of town begins with a climb — north over the hill toward Kamala, south up and over toward Karon, or east up the long drag over the mountain to Phuket Town, roughly 14 kilometres away. There is no flat warm-up. Locals treat the Patong hill as the island's unofficial fitness test, and after a month of riding it, you will too.

The good news is that the climbs pay you back. The coast road north through Kamala and on toward Surin and Bang Tao strings together beach after beach with sea views most of the way. The southern run through Karon and Kata to the viewpoint and on toward Rawai is the classic postcard route. Inland, the roads around the Kathu reservoir and the back lanes toward the east coast are quieter, greener and mercifully flatter in stretches. And Phuket Town's Old Town, with its shophouses and coffee shops, makes a perfect mid-ride destination — earn the climb, take the coffee, roll home.

Mountain bikers aren't left out either: there are trails in the hills around Kathu and the island's green interior, best found through the local riding community rather than a map, because access and conditions change with the seasons.

The coast road out of Patong in either direction is where island cycling lives — beaches every few kilometres, a hill between each one.

Routes Worth a Month of Mornings

  • The north coast roll: Patong hill, Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao and back. Beach stops the whole way; turn around wherever your legs or the coffee dictates. This is the ride most long-stayers settle into twice a week.
  • The southern classic: over the hill to Karon and Kata, up to the viewpoint, and on to Rawai for a seafood lunch before the ride home. The descents are the reward; take them at your own pace, not the traffic's.
  • The Old Town coffee run: over the mountain to Phuket Town, a loop of the Old Town streets, coffee and a bakery stop, then back. Urban riding at both ends, so pick your timing.
  • The inland loop: Kathu and the reservoir roads — quieter traffic, plantation shade, and the island's green interior that most visitors never see.
  • The big one: a full island loop is a serious day out that experienced riders build up to over a stay — it links almost everything above into one long, hot, memorable circuit. Earn it late in your stay, start before dawn, and plan the water stops.

Whatever the route, the pattern is the same: the island rewards riders who go early, and punishes — with heat, mainly — those who don't.

Rent, Buy, or Bring?

For a month or more, the maths changes compared with a holiday hire. Bike shops in the Patong, Kathu and Phuket Town areas rent road and mountain bikes by the day and week, and most will talk sensibly about a monthly rate if you ask — a month almost always works out far better than thirty daily hires, so negotiate the long rate before the first ride, not after. Check what's included: a proper helmet, a lock, a spare tube and a pump matter more than a fancy frame.

Staying three months or longer? Buying a decent used bike and selling it on before you leave often beats renting, and Phuket's expat community turns over bikes constantly — community noticeboards and the riding clubs are the market. Either way, find your service shop early: the shop that rents and repairs in the Kathu/Phuket Town area will become your puncture-and-gears lifeline, and a basic service at the start of a stay is money well spent. If you're bringing your own bike on the plane, remember it travels as oversized baggage — book it with the airline in advance and keep the bike-shop details handy for the rebuild at this end.

A Phuket beach from the coast road — the view that pays you back for every climb
Every climb on the coast road ends at a beach like this. That's the deal Phuket offers cyclists.

Heat, Hydration and the Clock

The island's cycling day has a shape, and fighting it is a rookie error. The serious riders roll out at or before dawn — 5:30 to 6:00 starts are normal — because by 10:00 the heat is doing real work against you, and by midday it's winning. Plan rides to be finishing, not starting, as the morning peaks. Two bottles minimum, electrolytes as routine rather than rescue, and a 7-Eleven every few kilometres makes Phuket genuinely forgiving for refills — cold water is never far away.

The rainy season (roughly May to October) adds its own rules. Roads get slick with oil and leaf litter, descents demand respect, and afternoon downpours arrive fast enough to flood a road in minutes. Locals still ride year-round — they just ride the mornings, watch the sky, and treat a wet descent like it owes them money. A lightweight rain jacket lives in the jersey pocket from June onwards.

Traffic Reality: Ride Defensively, Always

Now the part that keeps you safe. Thai traffic is not hostile, but it is unpredictable in ways that matter on two wheels: scooters filtering everywhere, vehicles turning across you without drama or warning, dogs asleep in shaded corners of rural lanes, and the occasional patch of sand or gravel exactly where you want to brake. The riders who thrive here ride defensively and predictably — clear lines, early signals, no sudden moves, and an assumption that the vehicle that hasn't seen you is the one that matters.

Helmet on, every ride, no exceptions — and lights front and rear even in daylight make a measurable difference to how traffic treats you. High-visibility kit is not a fashion crime here; it's equipment. Stick to the left, take the lane calmly when a descent or a junction demands it, and give trucks and buses the wide respect their blind spots have earned. Finally, insurance: check that your travel or health cover actually includes cycling — some policies treat it as a sports extra — because the island's hospitals are excellent and not free. Riding in a group, especially early on, is the fastest way to learn the local rhythm: which junctions bite, which dogs chase, which cafés welcome sweaty cyclists.

Evening on a Phuket beach — finish the ride early and the island's evenings are the reward
Ride at dawn, and this is your finish line most evenings. The island runs on an early clock for a reason.

The Social Side: Clubs and Group Rides

You don't have to work any of this out alone. Phuket has an active riding community — road groups that roll out early from set meeting points, triathlon trainees doing their long weekend rides, and mountain bikers who know every trail worth knowing. Long-stayers get absorbed quickly: show up at a shop ride or a club morning, say you're here for a few months, and the route knowledge, the service tips and the coffee stops all follow. It's also, not incidentally, one of the best ways to build a local life on a long stay — friendships here are made at 6 AM on the Patong hill as reliably as anywhere on the island.

Phuket on a bike is not the easy version of Phuket. It's the earned version — and a month in, when the hill out of Patong stops being a wall and starts being a warm-up, you'll understand why the dawn riders look so pleased with themselves.
